The DUAL 1009 model was first introduced in 1963 and is often hailed as one of the better turntables ever made by the famous German manufacturer. The 1009 SK variation for sale here came along in 1968. This elegant idler-drive player is built like a tank (the platter alone weighs 4 pounds) and, when properly serviced, seems poised to outlast its owners.

Audiophiles typically frown upon automatic turntables but with their very best decks Dual managed to achieve easy functionality without compromising on sound quality. Better yet, the 1009 can also be used in a fully manual mode and has 4 speed settings. The straight tonearm tracks beautifully and the suspended chassis design absorbs vibrations extremely well. Despite its heft this excellent turntable has a small footprint making it easy to place even when space is limited.

This particular piece was actually the first Dual I ever owned. I bought it from a Montreal doctor who purchased it new in 1968 and paired it with   a wonderful Bang & Olufsen Beomaster 1000 receiver. Both pieces were cherished parts of my collection for years but I have decided to part with them to make room for new acquisitions.

This Dual sat unused for many years and had to be completely restored. The motor was stuck, the idler wheel rubber had dried up, there was corrosion in the tonearm terminals and RCA outputs, dried grease on all moving parts and so on. The motor was torn down; all bearings and moving parts were cleaned and lubed, and the idler wheel was sent to The Voice of Music for refurbishing. All rust and corrosion was removed, and the platter and cover were polished. Comes with original 45 rpm adapter and brand new, gold-plated RCA cables

The tonearm has been fitted with an Ortofon Omega cartridge with a brand new needle. The sound is wonderful; full-bodied and detailed. This machine really makes the music come alive.

This unit comes with Dual's original "breadbox" case which is in near-immaculate condition. I've given it a light sanding and revitalized the wood with some oil. The smokey dust cover is flawless. There are some minuscule scuffs on the metal top plate and some wear on top of the headshell but other than that this vintage gem is impeccable.

If you'd like to own a 54-year-old gem of German engineering this beauty is set to run for a few more decades. The action is dead silent and smooth, and this marvelous machine is working like new. Just plug, play and enjoy.
